Author of "It's Five O'Clock" in Military Life: Stories and poems for children

Cindy Shaw is married to an army military police officer. They currently live on post next to the parade field. Each evening, their children run out to watch the lowering of the flag, inspiring her poem “It’s Five O’Clock” in Military Life: Stories and poems for children.

Cindy graduated from the University of Maryland, European Division, with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She has always loved reading and writing. She currently volunteers at her childrens' school in Wahiawa, Hawaii, where she is the coordinator for the incentive reading program and a volunteer librarian.

Flag Etiquette

Cindy's poem is about American patriotism, love of our flag, and the lowering of the flag each day. Do you know your flag etiquette? Remember to:
-- Fly the flag from sunrise to sunset. If displayed at night, make sure it is lighted.
-- Don't fly the flag on rainy days.
-- Always place the union (the blue field) at the peak or top end of the flagpole.
-- Lower the flag to half-staff to show respect for the death of an important individual, such as a president, or solemnity for a tragic event. First raise the flag to its full height and then bring it slowly down to a position halfway up the mast or flagpole.
-- In situations of distress, signal your emergency by flying the flag upside down. This is the only occasion on which it is proper to display the flag upside down.
-- The American flag must fly above any state flags or other banners that are hoisted on the same flagstaff.
